The Underappreciated Spokeshave
By Andrew Sawyer, Racine, Wisconsin
The most underappreciated, and underused tool in my shop is the spokeshave. I have five of them. The first one I had was a very frustrating tool to use, until I tuned it up. I had no idea what pleasure and versatility was hiding behind a good tune up. These highly maneuverable tools can help anyone. First I'll tell you about the different types of spokeshaves I have in my shop, and how I use them. Then I will cover how to tune them up.

Ask the Staff
Question: I'm thinking of purchasing an Earlex hp5500 spray system. I've read the reviews, which most rated it well for woodworking, but didn't like it for spraying paint. Why is that? I see in your new ad that it now comes with another tip for paint spraying. Does the new tip improve its paint-spraying capabilities?

Made by Hand
Book Review: A Delightful Journey
By J. Norman Reid,
Delaplane, Virginia Fidgen's book is a diverting introduction to working wood by hand. Written in a highly accessible style, more like a conversation with a woodworking friend than a beginner's manual, Fidgen explains the essentials for setting up a hand tool shop—basic tools, sharpening, constructing key appliances, processes for design and construction—then progresses to six innovative and beautiful projects, each building on skills developed in constructing the previous ones. WOOD SLICER
Testimonial
I bought one of your 3/4 inch WOOD SLICER Blades for my Band Saw...I set it up yesterday and the calibration was done in about 2 minutes, unlike the hours of issues I have had with two previous blades from your competitors...I was re-sawing some basswood for my Epilog Laser to do some of my laser art with your Wood Slicer Blade and it was like cutting like butter and very clean. This is one of the finest blades I have ever used. — Roland Brown Get Yourself a Wood Slicer:
