By Steven D. Johnson,
Racine, Wisconsin

Now that Spring has arrived in the Down to Earth Woodworking shop (earlier than expected!) Steven Johnson is figuring out how to rearrange his workshop schedule around the required spring odd jobs. That doesn't stop him from planning a new stand for his miter saw (and asking for your help!) and coming up with a great plan to repurpose his old cushy floor tiles as drawer liners.

Using Wood Putty

It never fails. When cutting out parts for a project or just handling the pieces during the glue-up, chips or dings are sure to happen and are going to need to be filled with some type of filler. The same is also true when working on old furniture. Nail holes need to be filled or the corner edge of a top has been slightly damaged. When it comes to the finishing stage, hiding these repairs can be quite a challenge..

Here are SEVEN TIPS for getting it right:

Ask the Staff

Question:   I have a set of oil stones that I inherited from my grandfather. They appear to be in fairly good shape, however it takes forever to grind an edge with them. I suspect that they may just be very clogged. Can you suggest a way of cleaning the stones? Also, what is a good technique to get them flat and suitable for honing plane blades?

E-mail us with your woodworking questions. If yours is selected for publication, we'll send you a free Highland Woodworking hat.

This Month's Testimonial for the WOOD SLICER

Just got my new Wood Slicer blade, set it up and "O-My-God" what a difference. My old blade had 11/16" drift in 8 inches. This one, I set it up straight and it resaws straight. Thank you very much. Really enjoyable. Cuts like going through butter. I've never had a blade cut so good. Ever. Below is a closeup picture of the swings I make. It requires a lot of resawing for the lath work.
